Overview
Electric Distribution maintains the electric distribution lines that provide electric service to our customers. They are responsible for the maintenance of 75 miles of primary distribution lines, our distribution substation on Lincoln Street, as well as many more miles of secondary lines, services structures, etc. They install/repair/maintain street lighting, traffic signals on city-maintained streets, cut & trim trees for right-of-way maintenance, assists in electric maintenance at city-owned buildings/facilities, assist Street & Property Maintenance Division with tree trimming over streets, assist other governmental agencies, perform community service work, etc.
Water Treatment Plant personnel operate and maintain the WTP, provide potable water (testing at the plant and throughout the system to assure compliance with all US EPA and NCDENR requirements) for consumption by our customers, provide water for fire fighting, maintenance of our 6 elevated tanks, and 3 off-site booster pump stations. The plant uses a state-of-the-art supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for plant monitoring of operations, treatment processes, and distribution system activity/demand. The SCADA is monitored and operated by our staff 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Wastewater Treatment Plant personnel operate and maintain the WWTP, protect the water quality of our streams & rivers by assuring all wastewater discharged meets US EPA and NCDENR Permit requirements through monitoring and testing at the plant and throughout the collection system. They work with our industrial customers through a Pretreatment Permitting process by monitoring and testing to keep operating costs at the WWTP as low as possible, and to assist our industry in their efforts to meet US EPA and NCDENR Rules and Regulations imposed upon them.
Water Distribution and Collections is the distribution of safe water from the Water Treatment Plant to your home or business and collecting the sewage and sending it to the Waste Treatment Plant. The City maintains 260 miles of water line, 5,400 water services, 224 miles of sewer line, and 3,850 sewer services and has 19 sewer pumping stations.
